Materials Research Society (MRS)

Fall Meeting

November 30 - December 4, 2009

Boston, MA

Marni Goldman Memorial Symposium - Educational Session

Marni Goldman served as Education Director of CPIMA and as Associate Director of Science Outreach at Stanford University.  Despite being severely disabled, she obtained a Ph.D. in Materials Science from UC Berkeley, was heavily involved in educational outreach, and had a major impact on Stanford as well as on all who interacted with her. It is very unusual for the MRS to have symposia dedicated to an individual unless that person has a Nobel Prize or has been a leader in a field for many decades. Thus, this is quite an honor. This is an invitation for you to participate in this meeting.

The sessions will be relevant to the educational and professional goals which Marni pursued with such determination. The initial session will have a short memorial to Marni. The remainder of the session will focus on science or educational initiatives with an emphasis on projects in which she was involved: summer internships, encouraging the disabled to participate in science, public outreach, and RET. Although RET is not specifically listed in the MRS call for abstracts, Jay Dubner (Columbia University) and Fiona Goodchild (UC Santa Barbara) will be involved in creating such a session if we receive sufficient abstracts.

Your participation in the MRS meeting could be in either the educational session or in one of the myriad scientific sessions that week. If you do the latter, please include a phrase “Dedicated to the Memory of Marni Goldman”.

To participate in the meeting you must submit an abstract during the period May 23-June 23, 2009. This session will most likely be on Tuesday, December 1st but check the MRS website for the schedule. The final program will depend on abstracts we receive, but the following sessions will lead off the event:

Session 1.       “Memorial to Marni”: Charles Wade (IBM), Peter Davies (Univ. Pennsylvania), Ron Gronsky or Lisa Pruitt (Univ. of California at Berkeley); Curt Frank (Stanford).    These speakers had extensive interaction with Marni.
Session 2.        “Knocking Down the Barriers: Facilitating the Participation of the Disabled in Science and Engineering”: Kristin Black (Stanford), Peggy Cebe (Tufts University), former interns in Marni’s programs at Stanford, etc.
Session 3.        “Research Experiences for Teachers”: Fiona Goodchild (UC Santa Barbara), Jay Dubner (Columbia University)
Sessions beyond these will be chosen from abstracts

If you’ve questions about the memorial session for Marni, please contact Ann Peterson (annpete@us.ibm.com, 408 927-1602)

News
1.1.2008 It is with great sadness to report the passing of Dr. Marni Goldman. There was no one more supportive of the RET concept and community than Marni. She was one of the chief organizers of the three national RET Conferences as well as the original administrator of this website. She will be greatly missed by the RET Community, her family, friends and colleagues. http://www.marnigoldmanmemorial.com/
